The Hon'ble President of India, in his address to the Joint Session of Parliament on 9th June, 2014 had announced "By the time the Nation completes 75 years of its Independence, every family will have a pucca house with water connection, toilet facilities, 24x7 electricity supply and access."
At the slum decadal growth rate of india 34%, the slum households are projected to go upto 18 million. 2 million non-slum urban poor households are proposed to be covered under the Mission. Hence, total housing shortage envisaged to be addressed through the new mission is 20 million.
"Housing for All" Mission for urban area will be implemented during 2015-2022 and this Mission will provide central assistance to implementing agencies through States and UTs for providing houses to all eligible families/beneficiaries by 2022. There are 159 slums in this Barasat municipality. All of these slums suffer from housing shortage (the minimum size of houses are below the standards as per National Building Code (NBC)).various infrastructural shortcomings and service deficiencies in the nature of broken septic tanks, open defecation systems, inadequate quantity of drinking water, water logging due to improper drainage, broken roads, inefficient solid waste management etc. Projects have been planned for the improvement of housing, roads, water supply, and drainage systems and for the maintenance of existing slum Infrastructure.
